For most of this century, marine mammals and the oceans in general have been under attack. Most of the great whales have been hunted to near extinction. In the last 30 years over six million dolphins have been slaughtered in fishing nets. Thanks to the outcry of many thousands of outraged citizens, the killing has dramatically slowed. There is an international ban on whaling. However, some countries like Japan, Norway, and Russia choose to ignore the ban. Each year they increase their quota of whales, while at the same time finding fewer and fewer whales to kill.
For nearly a decade, there has been a ban on the sale of non-dolphin safe tuna in this country. This has greatly helped the dolphins. However, recent studies show that most populations have not begun to recover. Despite this, President Clinton and his adminisration pushed through a bill a few years ago allowing non-dolphin safe tuna to be sold in the US again. To add insult to injury, they later passed a bill weaking the definition of the dolphin safe label. These are just a couple examples of the trials facing dolphins and whales today.

Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network
This group runs a dolphin rescue network along the Texas coast. When they are able to reach beached dolphins before they die, the dolphins are given 24-hr-a-day care, then released back into the wild. This is a very worthy group.

Here you can adopt one of four dolphin species, a humpback whale, or even a wolf. The money made from these kits goes to help the animals you adopt. A very neat and fun site.
